There was much excitement in Brisbane and Ipswich this week, as 2 Regent Honeyeaters were spotted feeding in Eucalypts at Springfield.
Regent honeyeaters are critically endangered in South Eastern Australia, and where once they were seen in flocks of hundreds, their numbers have now diminished dramatically. It is a stunning bird coloured black and yellow, but when it is high in a eucalypt, it’s bright colours amazingly disappear into the foliage !!
Regent honeyeaters are now believed to number between 800-2000 in the wild !!! Habitat clearing and increasing competition with larger birds for food sources has lead to the dramatic decline in their numbers across South Eastern Australia.
